Open Data NRW

Web Mapping, Feature and Coverage Services for QGIS

Throughout the course we will consistently use open data provided by the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia via Geobasis NRW.

The following sites are the main starting points for the open data. Unfortunately there is only a German version provided. Please use Google Chrome (or another capable browser) to translate the pages to English!

  1. Geobasis NRW - Products and Services:
  2. Open Data - Digital Geospatial Base Data NRW (Open Data - Digitale Geobasisdaten NRW):
    https://www.bezreg-koeln.nrw.de/brk_internet/geobasis/opendata/index.html
    1. XML to fill WMS (Web Mapping Service) selection list in QGIS (right click link → “save link as …”)
    2. XML to fill WCS (Web Coverage Service) selection list in QGIS (right click link → “save link as …”)
    3. XML to fill WFS (Web Feature Service) selection list in QGIS (right click link → “save link as …”)

To fill in all WMS, WCS and WFS services in the QGIS online resources go to link 3 and scroll down to the end to the table “Further Information”.

Right click on the links to the xml-files listing the online geodata services and save them locally on your computer's file system.

In QGIS click on “add WMS/WMTS layer”, “add WCS layer” and “add WFS layer”, respectively and load the corresponding xml files.

This provides a long list of all available online services by Geobasis NRW. Now you can connect to them and load them for your project.
